BrainyQuote

Visualization

My design challenge was to interpret a quote as an animated visualization enhancing and expanding the meaning of the original quote.

The animation should be clearly focused on enhancing the quote itself.

BrainyQuote is the world’s largest quotation site. They educate and entertain audiences of all ages with family-friendly quotations from history’s most prominent figures through to today’s newsmakers famous celebrities, athletes, politicians, and authors.

Users including educators, students, writers, journalists, researchers, and media professionals of all ages can find great quotes on BrainyQuote and their social networks on Facebook, Twitter, and Pinterest.

“Vision is the Art of Seeing

What Is Invisible to Others.”

- Jonathan Swift

Irish writer and satirist.

The writer of “Gulliver’s world”.

Quote Selection

Vision is like a prism, revealing what remains hidden from others. Just as a prism refracts light to expose its brilliant facets, a visionary mind refracts the ordinary to reveal extraordinary possibilities. Through the clear lens of its perception, it unveils the hidden beauty, innovation, and potential that often go unnoticed by those with untrained eyes.

In this direction, the sculpture with a "vision" sees the mandala(kaleidoscope) design, which is the hidden beauty of the crystal(prism) in front of it.

The Hidden Beauty

While this iteration boasted a more visually captivating presentation compared to its predecessors, it still fell short in effectively conveying the essence of the quoted text.

The marble statues failed to evoke a genuine sense of "people" engaged in contemplation, as their inanimate nature detracted from the intended connection.

Additionally, the use of a third-person perspective for the shots introduced potential confusion among the audience regarding the clear interpretation of the quote.

To authentically capture the protagonist's point of view, it is imperative to emphasize the vantage point from which the protagonist observes, rather than adopting a detached third-person perspective.

Having a vision means being able to perceive things that others cannot. People with visions share their insights with others and help them appreciate the beauty of what they see.

In this direction, a father and his son are at a camping site, gazing at the night sky.

The father imparts his knowledge to his son, pointing out how the stars come together to form constellations.

The son follows the direction of his father's gaze and sketches the intricate patterns that the stars create.

This moment encapsulates the transfer of vision from one generation to the next, demonstrating the power of sharing one's perspective to inspire others.

I had an experience using Mixamo for character rigging animation from my junior year’s project.

It was fun to explore the website and see what kind of animations I can use for my animation.

For one of my other school projects, I had a chance to learn SideFx Houdini and model a terrain using the software.

I thought it would be awesome to use my own terrain image for the background element.

Mountain Background

1st Pass Animation

After talking to my art director, I decided to make these changes to my design for the next pass.

-Show more details on the tent.

- Make the mountains look more realistic. (Try finding real mountain images if it's hard to 3D model.)
- Maybe have the characters in the frame the whole time. (Try showing them from different angles.)

-  The depth of field feels a little off now. When the stars are focused in the camera, the mountain cannot be out of focus.

Also, I got some ideas for the animation after the conversation.

- Start with the basic shapes of a constellation and show them turning into more detailed, and unique star shapes. (e.g. a simple Leo shape becomes a detailed shape resembling a lion.)
- Make the camera move slower.
- Incorporate more interesting animations for the type.

2nd Pass Animation

After this pass, I decided to make my type of animation more interesting but not too distracting.

To solve the readability issue, I tried making the text stay in the frame the whole time during the animation.

Also, I had to focus on the camera movement and the timing of the characters motion.
